Data Engineer – Finance

Location: South Africa

Salary: Market related
Duration: 12 month contract

Own finance data end-to-end and build trusted, audit-ready data products in a regulated environment.

Is this you?

You’re detail-driven with a finance-first mindset and enjoy working at the intersection of data engineering and financial control. You’re comfortable translating accounting and regulatory concepts into robust data logic, challenging data quality issues at source, and collaborating closely with Finance, Risk and Engineering teams. You take pride in ownership, documentation, and delivering work that stands up to audit scrutiny.

What you’ll be doing (and why you’ll enjoy it)

You’ll design, build and operate finance-owned data products within a data mesh environment, ensuring financial data is accurate, reconciled, governed and reusable. This includes engineering ingestion pipelines from core banking, payments, sub-ledgers and ERP systems, implementing event-driven and batch processing, and building transformations from raw to reporting-ready datasets. You’ll embed finance-grade data quality controls, reconciliation logic and lineage, enabling end-to-end traceability from transaction through to report, while supporting regulatory, financial and management reporting.

Where you’ll be doing it

Our client is a well-established organisation operating in a highly regulated financial environment, recognised for its strong governance culture and modern data practices. Finance plays an active role as a data product owner, with a clear focus on accountability, control and collaboration. You’ll join a delivery-focused team that values ownership, transparency and building data platforms that genuinely support business and regulatory outcomes.

What you’ll need

You’ll have 5–8+ years’ experience in data engineering or analytics roles, with proven exposure to financial data in regulated industries. Strong SQL, experience with modern data platforms, event streaming, data modelling and transformation frameworks are essential, along with a solid understanding of financial concepts such as sub-ledgers, GL, reconciliations and controls. A relevant degree is required, with finance or cloud certifications advantageous.

What you’ll get

A competitive, market-related salary, the opportunity to work closely with senior finance stakeholders, and the chance to build high-impact, trusted data products in a mature control environment.
