Towards the end of the year there are a few things that you need to keep in mind if you are in the job market and as an employer who is hiring these are things that you need to speak to candidates about.
Leave in your notice period
Have you booked any leave for end of the year. If you resign and are in your notice period, your employer does not have to allow you to take that leave – even if it has been signed off – they can still decide to rather pay you out. The question you need to ask yourself – are you ok to walk away from that leave/holiday worst case scenario.
Leave in your first few months at your new employer
If that holiday you have booked for December/January will fall into the first few months of your prospective new employer it’s important to bring this up early in the interview process to see if they will allow you to take these days and potentially go into negative leave or take unpaid leave. Don’t just assume that you can take this holiday
Bonuses/13th cheques
Are you expecting a bonus or a 13th cheque? What will happen when you resign? Will you still be awarded that bonus if you resign? These are all questions you need to ask yourself and most importantly – are you willing to lose that bonus worst case scenario for the new opportunity?
None of these should be deal breakers on any side and the earlier these issues can be brought up in the interview process the more likely it will be that both parties can find a solution that works.
Open communication is key to ensuring a smooth transition for both candidates and employers. By addressing these points early, candidates can make informed decisions, and employers can better understand the needs of their potential new hires.
As we approach the festive season, let’s remember that while the holidays are a time for celebration, they also bring unique considerations for those in the job market.
