Think beyond salary when creating competitive packages.

We know that budget is one of the biggest challenges for small to medium-sized businesses trying to compete with the “big guys” when hiring top talent.

But a competitive offer isn’t only about the number on the payslip.

If you can’t match large corporate salaries, think creatively about what else you can offer:

  • More leave – Many candidates value time as much as money. Offering 20–25 days instead of the standard 15–18 can make a big difference.
  • Risk benefits – Things like funeral, disability, or income protection cover aren’t costly, but they show genuine care for your team’s wellbeing.
  • Flexibility – One of the biggest advantages smaller businesses have. Whether it’s hybrid working, flexible hours, or remote options – these can be huge differentiators.

The point is: you don’t always need the biggest budget to attract great talent.

You just need to think differently, know what matters most to your candidates, and build packages that reflect that.
